Catherine May Hanley was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 22, 1906 to William Alton Hanley and May Register Hanley. She had a younger brother, William Alton Hanley, Jr. (born 1910). She married James B. Crandall, and had three children with him, James B. Crandall, Jr. (born 1932), Calhorne M. Crandall (born 1934), and Patricia A. Crandall (born 1936). She lived in Lincoln, Nebraska at the time of her father's death in 1936, and she died on February 28, 1979 in York, Pennsylvania.
