Portrait of Joseph E. Steele

Portraif of Joseph E. Steele, 4 Dec. 1838 - 7 July 1864. Eldest son of Albert Gallatin and Emily (Hampton) Steele. He was buried at Hamburg, Alabama after having enlisted in the Missouri State Guard in 1861, with his brother George Adison Steele. George was with Gen. John Pemberton's troop, along with some 200 men, who were taken prisoner at the battle of Champion Hill, Mississippi in May 1863. He was with Bledsoe's Battery, Smith's Regiment of Light Artillery, Hardee's Corps. He died at Fort Delaware on 9 Oct. 1863.
