Owens, Samuel Combs

A tribute or memorial to Samuel C. Owens, beautifully illuminated, with a small photograph. This illuminated item was produced by Owen's son-in-law, Samuel R. Phillips (Boston). Owens, the first clerk of Jackson County, was a Santa Fe Trail pioneer and operated a prosperous commercial venture between Independence, Missouri and Santa Fe, then in Mexico. At one time this portrait was exhibited on the Jackson County Historical Society Archives walls (Number 17 from an undated inventory of exhibited artwork, which is maintained in a JCHS administrative file with other exhibitions, loans, and accessions.)
